What is network security?
Network security is the combination of measures and activities that protect networks and the computers and resources attached to them from unauthorized access, misuse, modification or denial of service.
Network security can be accomplished through a multilayered defense, including protecting the edge of the network at the router (where it connects to the internet) and using endpoint security to safeguard individual computing devices.
Why you need network security
Online criminals are skilled at infiltrating home and business networks for profit. Their schemes range from stealing personal identities and information such as bank account numbers to encrypting your computer files and preventing you from opening them until you pay a ransom.
While the term "network security" conjures images of large corporate networks with hundreds or thousands of attached computers and devices, a small-business network or even a few computers attached to a home router are also networks. Protecting them is every bit as important, because the data and personal info they contain are yours.
