ESET, the leading endpoint IT security company based in the European Union, is now a member of Europol’s Advisory Group on Internet Security. Representing ESET in the group is IT security industry veteran and ESET Senior Research Fellow Righard Zwienenberg. The group works within Europol’s European Cyber Crime Center.
„ESET’s task is to protect hundreds of millions of its users, and as well to educate and provide awareness about cybercrime. On occasion, we join forces with law-enforcement to hunt down cyber criminals. Now we will be better prepared to advise the group when our input and knowledge can serve in the protection of online users and help in fighting cybercriminal operations,” says ESET Senior Research Fellow Righard Zwienenberg, a native from The Hague who shares his hometown with Europol’s headquarters. „ESET joins the Advisory Group as the largest IT security company based in the European Union which partners with Europol and consults on cybercrime, a fact that makes us all the more proud of this opportunity,” added Righard Zwienenberg.
Europol set up the European Cybercrime Center to strengthen law enforcement’s response to cybercrime in the European Union, and thus, to help protect European citizens, businesses and governments from online crime. Since its establishment, the Center has made a significant contribution to the fight against cybercrime. It has been involved in tens of high-profile operations and hundreds of on-the-spot operational-support tasks. Europol is the European Union’s law enforcement agency.
“Since its inception in 2013, the European Cybercrime Centre has worked with IT security companies to protect European citizens from cybercriminals. We are happy to welcome ESET on board, along with their advice, to tackle the ever-growing problem of malicious online activity,” says Steven Wilson, Head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3).
ESET partners with law enforcement agencies when required to bring cybercriminals to justice, regardless of where they are based - in or out of Europe. In December of 2017, security researchers from ESET collaborated with law enforcement agencies including Europol to disrupt and take down a major botnet operation known as Gamarue.
