En 1987, deux jeunes enthousiastes programmeurs Peter Paško et Miroslav Trnka ont découvert l'un des premiers virus informatique au monde. Ils le batisèrent alors "Vienna" et écrivirent un programme afin de le détecter. Beaucoup d'autres découvertes de virus suivirent rapidement, suscitant alors l'idée de concevoir une solution logicielle universelle afin de contrer ces menaces informatiques relativement inconnues. C'est pourquoi Peter Paško et Miroslav Trnka ont alors co-programmé le premier NOD. Cependant, puisque l'entrepreneuriat privé était interdit pendant le communisme, ce n'est qu'en 1992, que Miroslav et Peter, avec leur ami Rudolf Hrubý, ont créé ESET en tant que société à responsabilité limitée privée.

After ESET was formally established in 1992, the company’s logo and retail box design evolved through the years. Initially the focus was on ESET pill-shaped logo as a symbol of curing computes, in 2007 the figure of the ESET Android has come in the limelight.
